H5 avian influenza has now been detected in a wild bird in Victoria’s south-west, making this Victoria’s first confirmed case of the disease.

While this detection is concerning, given the spread interstate, it is not unexpected. It is important to remain calm and follow the advice of authorities.
The detection is in a wild bird and there has been no spread to commercial poultry flocks or any agricultural environment at this time and the risk to human health remains very low.
However, this is a timely reminder that preparation and vigilance are essential.
We strongly encourage all farmers to review and update their biosecurity plans to ensure they are comprehensive and reflect current risks. Good biosecurity remains the best defence against the introduction and spread of disease.
