Have your say on the Albanese Government’s new tax on agriculture

The VFF is reviewing its Biosecurity Policy Statement and wants to hear our members’ views on how the Commonwealth biosecurity system should be funded in the future.

The Albanese Government’s 2023-24 Federal Budget announced a biosecurity sustainable funding package of $1.03 billion over 4 years and $267 million per year ongoing from 2027-28.

This package introduces a new model for funding biosecurity protection services based on shared responsibility. The new model states that as primary producers benefit considerably from Australia’s favourable biosecurity status, they should also contribute to the cost of Australian Government biosecurity activities.

The government is currently seeking feedback on the proposed Biosecurity Protection Levy, which will have cost implications for the agricultural sector. The submission deadline is set for 6 October.

The VFF is undertaking a survey of members’ views on biosecurity funding to help advocate as part of the Commonwealth’s consultation process. Please take 5 minutes to share your views through our survey.  Your response is requested by Thursday 28 September 2023
