Warmest January on record for Victoria

Victoria's warmest January on record followed on from its warmest December. Average maximum temperatures for the month were more than 6 degrees warmer than normal in parts of the north. Many stations had their highest daily January temperature on record. Kerang recorded 47.6 °C on the 25th - a new January temperature record for Victoria. Some stations in the north set new records for the number of days reaching 40 °C or more: Mildura Airport (13), Walpeup Research (12), Ouyen (Post Office) (12), Yarrawonga (11), Hopetoun Airport (10), Kerang (10), Echuca Aerodrome (10) and Rutherglen Research (10). Average minimum temperatures were more than 3 °C warmer than usual over much of the north and east.





Much of southern Victoria recorded monthly rainfall totals in the driest 10% of their historic record and parts of the southwest had their driest January on record. Cape Otway Lighthouse had its lowest January rainfall since 1878. Most of western Victoria recorded less than 5 mm for the month.
