The Victorian Farmers Federation today welcomed the Federal Government’s announcements on drought funding and initiatives to underpin long-term preparedness.
The Prime Minister today announced a number of drought measures including the establishment of a $5 billion Future Drought Fund, commencing with a $3.9 billion investment, to support farmers and their rural and regional communities.
“Many Victorian farmers are currently enduring drought conditions that place great stress on their businesses, families and regional communities,” said David Jochinke, President, Victorian Farmers Federation.
“After attending today’s meeting in Canberra, we welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to continue to build drought resilience and preparedness by funding water infrastructure and mental health services and supporting local communities and charities in providing farming families with basic essentials.
“Our drought-affected farmers are doing it tough. Today’s announcements will help them through this difficult period but it also assists farmers to prepare for future drought conditions.
“We encourage all sides of government to work together on drought and ensure that attention from this issue does not dwindle once the rain arrives.
“Too often we focus on drought only in times of drought. We need to ensure a more proactive and long term approach for drought preparedness and resilience,” said Mr Jochinke.
